Interprofessional Practice and Education News!

by Tracy Christopherson

Greetings!  Welcome to my blog to update everyone on the many exciting things happening to advance Interprofessional Practice and Education in the United States as well as an important global event this fall.    Why is there so much attention being given to this at this point in time?  The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and models such as the Transitional Care Model, Accountable Care Organizations and the Medical/Healthcare Home are increasing awareness and interest in how teams of interprofessionals can be leveraged to enhance quality, safety and the efficiency of care and how we can prepare the health care workforce of tomorrow to actually deliver care in an interprofessional manner.

On May 10th the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) released the Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice.  These competencies were developed by an expert panel appointed by IPEC.  IPEC is comprised of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH).  Click here to review the report.   When I reviewed the competencies put forth by IPEC I was thrilled to see how the CPM Framework™ and Models align with and supports these competencies.

The Core Competency general statements are as follows:

The CPM Resource Center testified at the October 2009 Acute Care and the February 2010 Education Forum (excerpts below):

Acute Care Forum:

An important innovative model for RWJF/IOM heard testimony on is the Clinical Practice Model (CPM)™ which has been evolving since 1983 with the input of thousands of nurses and interdisciplinary clinicians via an international healthcare consortium.  The CPM Resource Center supports a professional practice framework that addresses the fundamental elements of creating healthy healing work cultures keeping patients and nurses safe.  The CPM Framework™ , innovative in its inception, is fundamental today as nurses continue to face many complexities in the acute care environments to provide  interdisciplinary care and successfully integrate intentionally designed technology to support quality care and outcomes.  With over 290 acute care settings who have implemented the CPM Framework, point of care clinical documentation is updated on a continuous basis, meets current patient safety goals/regulations and ties quality/safety care research and standards to their professional scope of practice.
