Getting the Evidence into Practice: Practice Guidelines


"Evidence-Based Practice" is a growing topic In health care today. Some articles and editorials have cited evidenced-based practice as the newest "buzzword" or latest "catch phrase" in today’s focus on health care reform, outcomes management and cost-effective delivery of services. Many health care professionals desire to know more about what is clinically effective in their practice but are confused about the terminology as well as what is practical application in their day-to-day practice. The completeness of evidence on which practice is based and the way in which this evidence has been applied to practice are key considerations to effectiveness in clinical settings. This workshop is about bringing the evidence into practice at the point of care, where the care is delivered. Quality patient care thrives when a framework exists to create systems supports and tools for bedside practitioners. Practice Guidelines are one valuable tool to strengthen evidence-based knowledge and integrate it into professional practice. This workshop shares the process of practice guideline development including research utilization, expert review and content validity to assure representation of the best evidence available for integration into professional practice.
