Nurse-Physician Collaboration: Exploring Partnering Relationships


This workshop will take a close look at nurse-physician collaboration and explore the nature of partnering . relationships at the point of care. Developing intentional partnering relationships provides an essential foundation on which to deliver quality patient care and create healthy, collaborative practice environments. A brief overview of the historical trends nurse-physician relationships will be explored as well as positive outcomes reported in several research studies. Principles of partnership and dialogue will be introduced as tools to facilitate meaningful conversation amongst the nurse and physician participants. It is a goal to uncover what key experiences each person has had related to partnering with the other discipline in co-creating synergistic and collaborative practice experiences. Also explored will be characteristics of partnering behaviors that invite collaboration into daily practice. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own patterns of partnering behaviors, to engage in conversation to increase understanding, and to identify ways to improve collaboration in working relationships. This workshop is intended to help both nurses and physicians to:
  • Articulate positive outcomes that that have been linked to the presence of collaboration among nurses and physicians.
  • Identify characteristics of partnering behaviors that invite collaboration into their daily practice.
  • Identify personal patterns of behavior that have been nurturing and/or damaging in creating collaborative practice relationships in the work setting.
  • Explore new ways of partnering with nurse and/or physician colleagues.
Note: this workshop can be adapted to any discipline/role - it is not limited to only nurses and physicians.
